Let There Be (Front) Light: Why Lighting from the Front Is Key to Great Photos

Whether you’re snapping a selfie, taking a professional headshot, or showcasing a product, one thing is certain—lighting matters. And not just any lighting… front lighting.

Here’s why:
When your light source is in front of your subject—like a window, ring light, or softbox—it illuminates the face evenly, reduces shadows, and makes colors pop. This results in clear, flattering, professional-looking photos.

Now flip that around. If your light source is behind you, you’re likely to end up with a dark, shadowy subject. It’s called being “backlit,” and unless you’re going for a dramatic silhouette, it’s a recipe for washed-out details and underexposed faces.

Quick tips for better lighting:

  • Face a natural light source like a window during the day.
  • Use a ring light or soft light placed just above or in front of your camera.
  • Avoid overhead lighting that creates harsh shadows.
  • Never have a bright light behind you unless you’re intentionally trying for a silhouette effect.

In short: if you want to shine, make sure the light is in front of you—always.
